Sweet Corn Puree is an easy to make corn puree recipe for baby.

Ingredients for this puréed corn recipe

For this baby corn purée you will need:

Sweet corn – Frozen sweet corn makes this baby food recipe super simple! If you have a bag of frozen corn kernels in the freezer, there’s no preparation needed; just steam, blend, serve. You can also use fresh sweet corn sliced off of corn cobs if you’d like. You might like to lessen the cooking time by 1 or 2 minutes if using fresh corn.

Tips for making Sweet Corn Purée

Thermomixer? I use my Thermomix to steam the corn. Make sure you have loose corn kernels in the simmering basket, and that they are not frozen together in a large lump. Otherwise, you’ll need to increase your cooking time😁. Then simply puree the corn in the machine until smooth.

Conventional cook? Cook your whole corn kernels however you normally would until soft. Then blend using whatever appliance you have on hand – a food processor, hand mixer or baby food maker.

See the recipe card below for ingredient amounts and detailed steps for both thermo cooker and conventional methods.

Transitioning to corn on the cob

I found that corn on the cob made a great finger food for Babies PK and LJ once they had moved past the purée stage, for us at about 9 months of age. I felt much more comfortable giving cooked corn on the cob rather than cooked corn kernels – these can be a potential choking hazard. And both boys loved gnawing away at the cob! It was (and still is) a great side dish for family meals.

Serving and storing this baby food purée

This Sweet Corn Purée is great tasty meal to serve on its own. It’s ideal for both Stage 1 (around 6 months of age) and Stage 2 (around 6-9 months) of weaning baby. For first stage/younger babies, try offering this corn purée as a very smooth purée. You can mix through a small amount of cooled boiled water, formula milk or expressed breast milk immediately before serving.

This corn purée for baby makes about 2/3 cup, so not a huge amount but generally enough as a first food. If making ahead or as leftovers, store this homemade baby food in an airtight container or reusable pouches in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or freezer for up to 1 month [2]. If freezing, ice cube trays are a good idea to store single serves. Be sure to practice food safety when freezing, defrosting and reheating baby food.

NEXT STEP! Once you’ve introduced corn to baby, it’s great to combine with other vegetables. Try progressing to this combination purée of Apple, Pumpkin and Sweet Corn. You can make it smooth or chunky as baby tries different tastes and textures. It’s also perfect for reusable pouches for baby for a sweet, yummy snack on the run.

This vibrant Sweet Corn Purée for baby is so easy to make, and a great food for when baby starts solids. It's natural sweetness is sure to be a hit! Sweet corn is rich in carbohydrates and fiber, and a good source of essential nutrients like folate, zinc, B vitamins and vitamin C. It makes a great pureé for baby's growth.

Ingredients

  • 140 g / 1 cup frozen sweet corn kernels
  • 500 g water

Thermo Cooker Instructions

  • Put the corn into the simmering basket.
  • Pour the water into the mixing bowl. Insert the simmering basket and cook for 7 minutes, Varoma, speed 2, MC on.
  • Remove the simmering basket, and reserve the cooking liquid in a bowl or jug.
  • Put the corn into the mixing bowl with 3 tbs of the reserved cooking liquid.
  • Puree corn for 30 seconds, speed 7, MC on, making sure to increase the speed gradually to avoid the corn kernels immediately sticking to the sides of the mixing bowl. Shake the lid a little before lifting it off. Scrape down the mixing bowl and lid, and repeat 1 to 2 times until you are happy with the consistency, adding more liquid if necessary (Note 1).

Conventional Instructions

  1. Steam the corn in a steamer basket over a medium saucepan/pot with lid for 5 minutes.
  2. Blend corn with 3 tbs of cooking liquid, using a food processor or electric hand blender, until you are happy with the consistency (Note 1).

Recipe Notes

1. Consistency– Depending on baby’s age and stage, you can adapt this easily to suit your baby’s needs. First tastes/early weaning? Add a little cooled boiled water, formula milk or expressed breastmilk immediately before serving to make a runnier purée. Later weaning? Make this as textured/mashed as you like by reducing the number of times you chop/blend.
2. Storage– Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days or freezer for up to 1 month. Be sure to practice food safety when storing, defrosting and/or reheating baby food. If using frozen food, defrost overnight in fridge and then reheat to steaming hot. Allow to cool before serving.
