Ingredients for Apple, Nectarine and Strawberry Purée

You need just three fresh ingredients to make this homemade baby purée:

Apples – I use sweet red or pink varieties of apples, whichever is on special and looks great at my local fruit market. Try Pink Lady, Fuji, Royal Gala, Red Delicious or similar. Avoid green apples if you can. Green varieties tend to be tart apples.

Nectarine – You’ll need one ripe nectarine. It should have some give when gently pressed, but not have wrinkled or bruised skin. White or yellow flesh will work, but my preference is for yellow, as the purée turns out a lovely deeper pink colour.

Strawberries – I use approximately 6 fresh strawberries in this recipe, but depending on what size yours are you can adjust accordingly.

How to make this fruit purée

This is a really straightforward recipe to make at home, whether you’re following thermo cooker or conventional instructions. I use my Thermomix, but you can use another baby food maker/appliance or the stovetop. Just steam the fruit, blend using your chosen appliance and you’re done in 15 minutes.

See the recipe card below for ingredient amounts and detailed steps for both thermo cooker and conventional methods.

How to serve Apple, Nectarine and Strawberry Purée

This Apple, Nectarine and Strawberry Purée is great to serve either on its own or with cereal or natural yoghurt. It was one of Baby LJ’s favourite brekky purées.

The consistency of this smooth blend works really well in reusable baby food pouches too – I put this in reusable pouches as a yummy fruit snack I knew Baby LJ would eat when we were out and about. I haven’t tried any others so can’t compare, but I use Sinchies reusable pouches.

It’s also really yummy and refreshing served chilled or semi-frozen, like a delicious real-fruit slushie!

Storing this homemade fruit purée

This homemade baby food can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. It can also be frozen. I used baby food freezer trays/ice cube trays for freezing individual portions, so that I had them available at the ready. Once frozen, you can transfer the cubes into labelled freezer bags. Remember to always be food safe when freezing, defrosting and reheating baby food 👍.

This Apple, Nectarine and Strawberry Purée is so deliciously sweet! It's a perfect purée recipe for when baby is starting solids. This homemade purée is great on its own, or with cereal, yoghurt, or spread onto pikelets for breakfast. On a hot summer’s day, why not serve it chilled or semi-frozen for a delicious real-fruit slushie? Baby is sure to love it, and you may find yourself enjoying this one too.

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples peeled, cored and roughly chopped (Note 1)
  • 1 ripe nectarine peeled and roughly chopped
  • 6 strawberries hulled and halved if large
  • 500 g water

Thermo Cooker Instructions

  • Put the apple into the simmering basket.
  • Pour the water into the mixing bowl. Insert the simmering basket and cook for 10 minutes, Varoma, speed 2, MC on.
  • Add the nectarine and strawberries into the simmering basket. Cook for 2 minutes, Varoma, speed 2, MC on.
  • Remove the simmering basket, and discard liquid.
  • Put the apple, nectarine and strawberries into the mixing bowl. Chop for 20 seconds, speed 7, MC on, making sure to increase the speed gradually to avoid the fruit immediately sticking to the sides of the mixing bowl.

Conventional Instructions

  1. Steam the apple using a steamer basket over a saucepan/pot with lid for 10 minutes or until apple is tender.
  2. Add the nectarine and strawberries and continue steaming for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  3. Using a food processor or electric hand blender, blend the fruit until you are happy with the consistency (Note 2).

Recipe Notes

1. Apples– Use sweet red or pink varieties of apples, like Pink Lady, Fuji, Royal Gala or Red Delicious. Avoid using green apples – they can be a bit tart.
2. Consistency– Depending on baby’s age and stage, you can adapt this easily to suit your baby’s needs. First tastes/early weaning? This is already quite a runny purée, but you might like to add a little cooled boiled water, formula milk or expressed breastmilk immediately before serving to make it runnier. Later weaning? Make this as textured/mashed as you like by reducing the chopping time and speed in Step 5 (Thermo Cooker Instructions) or Step 3 (Conventional Instructions).
3. Storage– Store in the fridge for up to 2 days or freezer for up to 1 month. Be sure to practice food safety [2] when storing, defrosting and/or reheating baby food. If using frozen food, defrost overnight in fridge and then reheat to steaming hot. Allow to cool before serving.
4. Nutrition– Per 1 cup serving, as a general guide only.
