Ingredients in Apple, Nectarine and Strawberry Puree

You need just three fresh ingredients to make this summer fruit baby puree:

Apples – I use sweet red or pink varieties of apples, whichever is on special and looks great at my local fruit market. Try Pink Lady, Fuji, Royal Gala, Red Delicious or similar. Avoid green apples if you can. Green varieties tend to be tart apples.

Nectarine – You’ll need one ripe nectarine. It should have some give when gently pressed, but not have wrinkled or bruised skin. White or yellow flesh will work, but my preference is for yellow, as the puree turns out a lovely deeper pink colour.

Strawberries – I use approximately 6 fresh strawberries in this recipe, but depending on what size yours are you can adjust accordingly.

How to serve this summer fruit puree

This Apple, Nectarine and Strawberry Puree is great to serve either on its own or with cereal or natural yoghurt. It was one of Baby LJ’s favourite fruit puree recipes for breakfast.

The consistency of this smooth puree blend works really well in reusable baby food pouches too. I put this in reusable pouches as a yummy fruit snack I knew Baby LJ would eat, for when we were out and about. I haven’t tried any others so can’t compare, but I used Sinchies [1] reusable pouches.

It’s also really yummy and refreshing served chilled or semi-frozen, like a delicious real-fruit slushie! Great for teething!

Storing

This homemade baby food can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. It can also be frozen.

I used baby food freezer trays/ice cube trays for freezing individual portions, so that I had them available at the ready. Once frozen, you can transfer the cubes into labelled freezer bags.

This Apple, Nectarine and Strawberry Puree is so deliciously sweet, and a yummy summer fruit puree recipe for when baby starts solids. This homemade strawberry combination puree is great on its own, or with cereal, yoghurt, or spread onto pikelets for breakfast. On a hot summer’s day, why not serve it chilled or semi-frozen for a delicious real-fruit baby slushie? Baby is sure to love it!

Ingredients

  • 500 ml water for steaming
  • 2 large apples peeled, cored and roughly chopped (Note 1)
  • 1 nectarine ripe, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 6 strawberries hulled and halved if large

Instructions

  • Place a steamer basket over a pot with 500 ml water (making sure the water level is below the basket so the apple won’t be submerged). Over high heat on the stovetop, bring the water to a boil. Add 2 large apples to the steamer basket. Cover with a tight-fitting lid, and reduce the heat to a simmer. Steam for 10 minutes or until apple is tender.
  • Add 1 nectarine and 6 strawberries and continue steaming for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  • Using a blender, food processor or electric hand blender, blend the fruit until you are happy with the consistency (Note 2).

Thermomix Instructions

  • Put 2 large apples into the simmering basket. Pour 500 ml water into the mixing bowl. Insert the simmering basket and cook for 10 minutes, Varoma, speed 2, MC on.
  • Add 1 nectarine and 6 strawberries into the simmering basket. Cook for 2 minutes, Varoma, speed 2, MC on. Remove the simmering basket, and discard liquid.
  • Put the apple, nectarine and strawberries into the mixing bowl. Chop for 20 seconds, speed 7, MC on, making sure to increase the speed gradually to avoid the fruit immediately sticking to the sides of the mixing bowl. See Note 2 on consistency.

Recipe Notes

1. Apples – Use sweet red or pink varieties of apples, like Pink Lady, Fuji, Royal Gala or Red Delicious. Avoid using green apples, they can be a bit tart.
2. Consistency – Depending on baby’s age and stage, you can adapt this easily to suit your baby’s needs. First tastes/early weaning? This is already quite a runny puree, but you might like to add a little cooled boiled water, formula milk or expressed breastmilk immediately before serving to make it runnier. Later weaning? Make this as textured/mashed as you like by reducing the chopping time.
3. Storing – Store in the fridge in a labelled airtight container for 2 days or freezer for 1 month. Be sure to practice food safety when storing, defrosting and/or reheating baby food. If using frozen food, defrost overnight in fridge and then reheat to steaming hot. Allow to cool before serving.
4. Nutrition – Per serving/batch (makes approx. 2.25 cups), as a general guide only.
