Kiwi fruit for babies

This kiwi baby food is a great way to introduce babies to the flavourful fruit. The apple helps to mellow some of the tartness of kiwi, whilst still letting that yummy flavour through.

Just be aware that kiwi (as with other acidic fruit) can sometimes cause a contact rash on baby’s sensitive skin [1].

Although not considered a ‘top 9’ allergen, kiwi fruit allergies are on the rise in older children [1]. If you’re concerned about making kiwi for baby, consult your child health practitioner first.

Ingredients in Apple and Kiwi Puree

This is an easy two-ingredient homemade baby puree:

Apples – Fresh apples, preferably a red or pink variety like Pink Lady, Fuji, Royal Gala, Red Delicious or similar. Don’t go for green apples, they can be a bit tart and the apple is needed to help mellow the kiwi!

Kiwi fruit – Choose kiwi that are slightly soft when pressed but not squishy (overripe).

How to make Apple and Kiwi Puree

This is an easy puree recipe to make. It’s only the apple that needs steaming, before blending with kiwi.

Scroll down to the recipe card below, to find exact ingredient amounts and full detailed steps for both regular and thermo cooker methods.

Step 1: Steam the apples using a steamer basket and saucepan on the stovetop.

Step 2: Once cooked, transfer the apple to a food processor or blender, add the kiwi fruit and blend to a puree.

THERMOMIX APPLE KIWI PUREE:

Thermomixer? Steam the apples using the simmering basket in your Thermomix. The cook times might vary depending on how small you’ve chopped the apple, so make sure you’ve cooked them until just soft. Then add the kiwi fruit and blend in your machine.

Serving

This apple and kiwi baby food is great to:

  • Have on hand in the freezer for easy fruit meals
  • Mix into cereal for a quick baby breakfast
  • Offer as a dessert after dinner

First stage weaning or second stage weaning?

This Apple and Kiwi Puree recipe is ideal for both Stage 1 (around 6 months of age) and Stage 2 (around 6-9 months) weaning.

For first stage/younger babies, offer for the first time as a very smooth puree by mixing through a small amount of cooled boiled water, formula milk or expressed breast milk immediately before serving.

For second stage weaning/older babies, increase the texture by blending/pureeing for less time.

The great thing about homemade baby food is that as baby grows and develops, you can progress to new textures from runny/smooth purees to chunkier mashed foods, to serving appropriately chopped soft foods as you would for the family.

Storing

This fruit puree can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freezer for up to 1 month.

If freezing, use baby food or silicone ice cube trays to freeze individual portions. They’re really handy to have prepared! As always, remember to be food safe when freezing, defrosting and reheating any baby food.

Apple and Kiwi Puree is an easy-to-make baby puree when starting solids. This simple baby food recipe combines naturally sweet apples with tangy kiwi. Your little one will love the fresh, fruity flavour of this combination puree. It’s a bright, yummy baby food!

Ingredients

  • 500 ml water
  • 1 large apple peeled, cored and roughly chopped (Note 1)
  • 2 kiwi fruit brown skin removed, roughly chopped

Instructions

  • Place a steamer basket over a pot with 500 ml water (making sure the water level is below the basket so the apple won’t be submerged). Over high heat on the stovetop, bring the water to a boil. Add 1 large apple to the steamer basket. Cover with a tight-fitting lid, and reduce the heat to a simmer. Steam for 10 minutes or until apple is tender. Reserve the cooking liquid.
  • Blend apple with 2 kiwi fruit and 2 tbs of cooking liquid, using a blender, food processor or electric hand blender, until you are happy with the consistency (Note 2).

Thermomix Instructions

  • Put 1 large apple into the simmering basket.
  • Pour 500 ml water into the mixing bowl. Insert the simmering basket and cook for 12 minutes, Varoma, speed 2, MC on. Remove the simmering basket and reserve the cooking liquid in a bowl or jug.
  • Put the apple into the mixing bowl with 2 tbs of the reserved cooking liquid. Add 2 kiwi fruit.
  • Chop for 15 seconds, speed 7, MC on, making sure to increase the speed gradually to avoid the fruit immediately sticking to the sides of the mixing bowl. Scrape down the mixing bowl and lid and repeat 1 to 2 times until you are happy with the consistency (Note 2).

Recipe Notes

1. Apples – Use sweet apples of the red or pink varieties, like Pink Lady, Fuji, Royal Gala or Red Delicious. Avoid using green apples – they can be a bit tart and their sweetness is needed to balance the kiwi.
2. Consistency – Depending on baby’s age and stage, you can adapt this easily to suit your baby’s needs. First tastes/early weaning? Add a little cooled boiled water, formula milk or expressed breast milk immediately before serving to make a runnier smooth puree. Later weaning? Make this as textured/mashed as you like by reducing the blending time. You may also like to reduce the amount of reserved cooking liquid you add. You won’t need much water, if any, to make a chunky apple and kiwi puree.
3. Storing – Store in the fridge in a labelled airtight container for 2 days or freezer for 1 month. Be sure to practice food safety when storing, defrosting and/or reheating baby food. If using frozen food, defrost overnight in fridge and then reheat to steaming hot. Allow to cool before serving.
