Avocados are full of healthy fats and fibre [1], which help support digestion and brain development, while cottage cheese is a fantastic source of protein and calcium [2], important for growing bones and muscles. Together, they make a soft, spreadable topping that’s easy for babies and toddlers to manage – and tasty enough for the grown-ups too!

Is toast okay for babies?

Yes – once baby is ready for finger foods (typically around 6 months, depending on their development), toast can be a great way to introduce new textures. Lightly toasting the bread makes it easier to hold, and topping it with nutrient-rich spreads like this one adds flavour and nourishment.

Just be sure to cut the toast into age-appropriate strips or pieces, avoid crusts and watch baby while they’re eating.

Ingredients in Avocado Cottage Cheese Toast

You only need four simple ingredients to make this creamy avo toast breakfast:

Avocado – Choose a ripe avocado that yields to gentle pressure. A soft avocado will mash more easily and combine well with the cottage cheese.

Cottage cheese – Go for full-fat, smooth cottage cheese (ideally with no added salt). It adds a gentle tang and creamy texture that babies usually love.

Lemon juice – Just a small squeeze to brighten the flavour and help slow the avocado from browning.

Black pepper – Optional! A light sprinkle adds flavour without heat. You can leave this out for younger babies.

And of course, bread – choose a soft, whole grain or sourdough slice, ideally low in sodium. Lightly toast it to make it easier for little fingers to hold. And for babies, remove the crusts as they can be harder to chew.

Serving

This cottage cheese and avocado spread recipe works so well for Baby Led Weaning (BLW) – just slice the toast into easy-to-hold strips (with crusts removed) and let baby feed themselves.

For toddlers, cut into strips, bite-sized squares or leave whole for more independent eaters. You can also serve alongside soft fruits for a balanced breakfast.

Older kids (and adults!) might like theirs with an extra crack of pepper, a sprinkle of fresh herbs, or even a dash of chilli flakes for more punch.

Storing

Avocado Cottage Cheese Toast is best enjoyed immediately after preparing, as the avocado mix can brown over time.

If needed, you can store the avocado-cottage cheese mix in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours – press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface to help prevent it browning. Give it a good stir and spread fresh on toast just before serving.
