This smooth and creamy Banana Puree for baby makes a perfect first food when your little one starts solids. With its naturally sweet flavour, banana is sure to be a favourite! Blending it with breast milk, formula or water makes it super smooth, and much easier for baby to eat in those early weeks of weaning than mashed banana, which can sometimes be sticky and thick. This homemade baby food is really quick to make too – just grab a ripe banana, your preferred milk/water and a blender, and in under a minute you have a fresh, nutritious puree ready to serve!
Benefits of banana
Bananas are a nutritious and versatile fruit that can be enjoyed on their own, or mixed with other fruit and vegetable purees. They’re packed with potassium, vitamin C, fibre, and essential B vitamins, supporting healthy growth and digestion [1]. Plus, the soluble fibre in bananas can slow digestion [1], which makes them a great food to try if baby is suffering from diarrhoea or upset stomach.
Ingredients in Banana Puree
Here’s what you need for this pureed banana recipe:
Bananas – Ripe bananas are ideal for creating a smooth and creamy puree! Choose a banana that’s yellow with just a few brown spots. The riper the banana, the sweeter and softer it will be, making it easier to blend into a smooth texture. But you don’t want to use an overripe, mostly brown banana.
Liquid – Adding a bit of expressed breast milk or prepared formula helps make the puree extra smooth and adds more nutrients. You can also use boiled water.
How to make Banana Puree
Using a blender or baby food maker, simply blend the chopped banana with your chosen liquid until smooth. You can also mash it by hand with a fork if you prefer a chunkier texture.
Thermomixer? If you’re using a Thermomix/thermo cooker, just add the chopped banana to the bowl along with your chosen liquid, then blend.
You’ll find the recipe card below, with ingredient amounts and detailed steps for both regular and thermo cooker methods.
Serving pureed banana
This Banana Puree is a perfect first food to serve on its own. It’s ideal for Stage 1 weaning (around 6 months). For Stage 2 weaning (6-9 months), you can simply mash a ripe banana with a fork for a chunkier texture.
Storing pureed banana
This Banana Puree makes about 1/2 cup. If you’re making it ahead or have leftovers, store the puree in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. If you refrigerate it, the colour will brown because of oxidation. Try to store it in a container with as little surface area as possible.
You can also store Banana Puree in the freezer it for up to 1 month. Using ice cube trays is a great way to portion single servings for freezing. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight to use the next day. Remember to follow safe practices when freezing, thawing, and reheating baby food.
