Green Bean Baby Puree is a mild, fresh and nourishing first food for babies starting solids. With its smooth texture and gentle flavour, green bean puree is a lovely way to introduce green vegetables early on. Use this puree to help your baby become familiar with savoury tastes from the beginning.

Green beans are naturally low in sugar [1] and rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals [1], making them a great everyday vegetable for babies. Steaming the beans until tender softens their texture and preserves their bright green colour, before blending them into a smooth puree that’s easy for babies to enjoy.
Ingredients in Green Bean Baby Puree
This is a simple single-ingredient puree, so you’ll just need:
Green beans – Choose fresh, bright green beans that are firm and snap easily when bent. Avoid beans that are limp, shriveled or have brown spots. Younger, thinner beans tend to have a milder flavour and blend more smoothly, making them ideal for baby puree.
I use 500g (1.1 lb) green beans for this recipe, which makes approximately 1 ¾ cups of puree, depending on how much liquid you add. Using a decent quantity helps achieve a smoother consistency when blending.

How to make Green Bean Baby Puree
Green beans cook relatively quickly and are really easy to prepare.
Scroll down to the recipe card below, to find exact ingredient amounts and full detailed steps for both regular and thermo cooker methods.
Step 1: Place a steamer basket over a pot with 1–2 cups of water, making sure the water doesn’t touch the basket. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
Step 2: Add the green beans to the steamer basket. Cover with a tight-fitting lid, reduce the heat to a simmer, and steam for 10-12 minutes, or until the beans are very tender and easily pierced with a fork or knife. Reserve the steaming water.

Step 3: Transfer the cooked beans to a blender or food processor. Add ¼ cup of the reserved steaming water and blend until smooth. If needed, add extra water ¼ cup at a time until you reach your desired consistency. You can also use cooled boiled water, breastmilk or formula to thin the puree for younger babies.

Note on blending: You’ll get a different consistency depending on how powerful your blender or food processor is. My nutribullet blender (above) blends the green beans to a really smooth consistency, whereas my old food processor (a work horse I can’t get rid of!) doesn’t achieve the same result (see the photo below).

THERMOMIX GREEN BEAN PUREE:
Thermomixer? Add the beans to the simmering basket, and with water in the mixing bowl, steam until soft. Reserve the cooking liquid. In the mixing bowl, blend the beans with ¼ cup of the reserved steaming water until smooth.
Serving
Green Bean Puree has a mild, savoury flavour that pairs well with lots of other foods. Try serving it:
- On its own as a smooth Stage 1 puree for early weaning.
- Mixed with mashed sweet potato or potato for a creamier texture.
- Combined with pureed carrot, pumpkin or zucchini for gentle flavour variety.
- Swirled through plain yoghurt or ricotta for older babies.
Feeding tip: Green bean puree is less messy than vegetables like beetroot, but it can still leave little green smears – a wipeable bib or damp cloth nearby is always handy!

Storing and reheating
STORING: Store Green Bean Puree in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
It also freezes well for up to 1 month. Spoon the puree into ice cube trays or baby food trays, freeze until solid, then transfer the cubes to a labelled, airtight freezer bag or container.
REHEATING: Defrost overnight in the fridge before reheating, covered, in the microwave in short bursts. Reheat to steaming hot all the way through and then let it cool. Always stir well and check the temperature before feeding baby.

Green Bean Baby Puree
Category: PuréeIngredients
- 500 g green beans top and tailed, halved
- 1-2 cups water for steaming
Instructions
- Place a steamer basket over a pot with 1-2 cups water (making sure the water level is below the basket so the beans won’t be submerged). Over high heat on the stovetop, bring the water to a boil.
- Put 500 g green beans into the steamer basket. Cover with a tight-fitting lid, and reduce the heat to a simmer. Steam for 10-12 minutes until the beans are quite tender when pierced with a fork or knife.
- Put the beans into a blender. Add 1/4 cup of the steaming water. Blend until you are happy with the consistency, adding 1/4 cup water at a time if needed (Note 1).
Thermomix instructions
- Put 500 g green beans into the simmering basket.
- Put 500g water into the mixing bowl. Insert the simmering basket and cook for 11 minutes, Varoma, speed 2, MC on, until the beans are quite tender when pierced with a fork or knife. Remove the simmering basket and reserve the cooking liquid in a bowl or jug.
- Put the beans into the mixing bowl with 1/4 cup of the reserved cooking liquid. Chop for 20 seconds, speed 6, MC on, making sure to increase the speed gradually to avoid the beans immediately sticking to the sides of the mixing bowl. Scrape down the mixing bowl and lid, and repeat 1 to 2 times until you are happy with the consistency, adding 1/4 cup water at a time if needed (Note 1).

One Response
This is a great puree for introducing green veggies early on! I’m a big believer in early, repeated exposure so that kids grow up used to eating greens – not an exact science I know, but it’s worked for my boys 🥰
