Homemade French onion spice blend is made with all natural ingredients.

Ingredients in this Homemade French Onion Soup Mix

Just six dried herbs are needed to make your own French onion spice blend:

Dried onion flakes – Using flakes makes this onion spice mix more similar to the packet variety.

Onion powder – More concentrated than onion flakes, it adds to the flavour.

Garlic powder – Gound garlic powder gives more savoury flavour.

Celery seed – Celery seed isn’t readily available in the two big Australian supermarkets (Coles and Woolies), and so I get mine from the local Sunlit, an Asian supermarket. Coles and Woolies do sell celery salt, which is a pre-made mix of salt (approx. 70%), celery seed (approx. 25%), rice flour and other herbs. You can substitute to still retain some of the celery flavour, but if you use celery salt the mix won’t be salt-free and gluten-free. You can also substitute with fennel seeds or caraway seeds. If the celery seeds aren’t ground, then grind them with a mortar and pestle.

Black pepper – Use ground black pepper.

Dried parsley – Dried parsley doesn’t have a very strong flavour, but it adds nice colour to the mix.

How to make French Onion Soup Mix

Simply combine all ingredients together in a small bowl.

If you’d like a finer powder-like spice blend, rather than this one with visible onion and parsley flakes, just blend for a few seconds in your spice grinder or Thermomix.

See the recipe card below for ingredient amounts.

Dry French onion soup mix is easy to make, just mix together the ingredients!

How to use this homemade onion soup mix

I created this copycat dry French Onion Soup Mix to make a healthier alternative of an old family favourite, Veggie Loaded Apricot Chicken.

This onion spice mix is also perfect for making your own homemade French Onion dip, adding flavour boosts to soups and casseroles, or to burgers or meatloaf. It’s perfect in a creamy potato bake too!

This spice mix recipe makes the equivalent of 1 packet. It measures out to about 1/3 cup. If you use French Onion Soup Mix often, multiply the ingredient quantities to make a large batch!

It’s important to note, this homemade mix doesn’t have any thickener. Depending on what you’re adding it to, you may find that you need a tablespoon or two of cornflour/cornstarch to make it have similar results to a French onion soup packet mix.

Homemade Dry French Onion Soup Mix is a versatile seasoning.

Storing this spice blend

Just like any spice blend, you can store this homemade mix in a sealed container in your pantry. A clean, dry recycled jar with a secure lid works perfectly, and it’ll stay fresh for up to six months.

Looking for another homemade spice mix? Try this No Salt Taco Seasoning as a healthier alternative to the store-bought version. It’s perfect in Mexican-Style Chilli Con Carne, as a seasoning for grilled chicken or ground beef for burritos or tacos.

Recipe Notes

1.  Celery seeds – Not to be confused with celery salt. Australian supermarkets sell celery salt, which is a pre-made mix of salt (approx. 70%), celery seed (approx. 25%), rice flour and other herbs. I buy celery seed at my local Asian supermarket.
2. Storage – Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to six months.
