Chicken Puree baby food served in a small white bowl.

The only chicken puree recipe you’ll need!

Babies generally don’t stay on purees for an extended period of time after starting solids – it’s recommended that the texture of their food move from puree to mashed/lumpy to normal texture by 12 months of age [1].

And so this was the only homemade chicken puree I served to Baby LJ before moving on to chunkier baby food and finger foods. The same can be said for my Beef Puree. He loved them both, and so I’d make a batch, serve as a meal and then freeze the rest in baby food/ice cube trays for short-term future meals.

Ingredients in Chicken, Sweet Potato and Thyme Puree

This homemade chicken puree has just a few wholefood ingredients:

Chicken thighs – Use thigh meat rather than breast if you can, for it’s flavour and nutritional profile.

Sweet potato – A yummy root vegetable to pair with chicken.

Onion – I use brown/yellow onion, but you could also use the same amount of white onion, shallot or leek.

Thyme – A great flavour to introduce to baby early into starting solids. Use fresh herbs if you can.

How to make Chicken and Sweet Potato baby food

Like all homemade purees should be, this chicken and sweet potato baby food an easy one to whip up the regular way or in a thermo cooker. I use my Thermomix, but any all-in-one appliance, baby food maker or stovetop and food processor will work!

First, sauté the onion and thyme on the stovetop in a tablespoon of olive oil, and then add the chicken, sweet potato and water. Bring to the boil and then simmer until the sweet potato is cooked through. Transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor to puree, being careful with the hot liquid.

Thermomixer? Simply chop, cook and blend in your machine.

You’ll find the recipe card below, with ingredient amounts and detailed steps for both regular and thermo cooker methods.

Serving Chicken Puree

Early into starting solids when spoon feeding Baby LJ, I served this Chicken, Sweet Potato and Thyme Puree on its own.

Later, I used it as a pasta sauce or served it chunkier with rice when Baby LJ was working on self-feeding.

Storing Chicken Puree

This chicken baby food can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. It can also be frozen for up to 1 month. I used baby food freezer trays/ice cube trays for freezing individual portions, so that I had them available at the ready. Remember to be food safe when freezing, defrosting and reheating baby food.

Another delicious homemade puree which is great to either serve on its own or as a pasta sauce for self-feeding and BLW is this Lentil Puree. Lentils are an amazing first food, and a nourishing vegetarian option for baby.

With nothing but the goodness of chicken, vegetables and thyme, it’s full of flavour and without any additives or preservatives. This is a very easy puree recipe to make, and your baby’s little taste buds will appreciate this home-cooked deliciousness!

Ingredients

  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 1/4 brown/yellow onion roughly chopped

Recipe Notes

1. Consistency– Depending on baby’s age and stage, you can adapt this easily to suit your baby’s needs. First tastes/early weaning? Chop until smooth, and add a little cooled boiled water before serving to make a runnier puree. Later weaning? Make this as textured/mashed as you like by reducing the water added in Step 2, or by reducing the water added in Thermomix Step 3 and chopping time and speed in Thermomix Step 4. Don’t leave out water completely – be sure there is enough in your saucepan or thermo cooker to avoid burning.
2. Storage– Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days or freezer for up to 1 month. Be sure to practice food safety [2]when storing, defrosting and/or reheating baby food. If using frozen food, defrost overnight in fridge and then reheat to steaming hot. Allow to cool before serving.
3. Nutrition– Per batch/serving (makes approx.. 2 1/2 cups), as a general guide only.
